A large and lively
Cretan village set in a superb location at the head of the peninsula
of Spinalonga, connected to the mainland by a narrow causeway, the
small island of Spinalonga sits in the entrance of the bay and has a
Venetian fortress.
Elounda is really a combination of
several villages which have effectively merged. The whole area is a
particularly scenic and although this former fishing village has grown
to become an established favourite Cretan destination, it still
possesses a certain relaxed charm with an attractive mix of old and
new and a pretty colourful harbour.
A cosmopolitan
crowd holiday in Elounda, including the wealthy with their yachts
moored in the harbour, which is in another focal point of the resort,
the harbour is full of life where the colourful fishing boats bob in
the water as the local fishermen land the day's catch. The vibrant
village square
is the hub of the
resort, lined with open air bars and tavernas looking out onto the
harbour, where there are boat trips to Spinalonga Bay - just across
the bay; soak up the atmosphere sitting by a café bar harbour-side
enjoying a drink or two watching the comings and goings of locals and
visitors stepping ashore.
Just beyond the
square there's Elounda beach with magnificent view of the mountains,
its purpose built for sunbathing, it’s sandy and has crystal clear and
shallow water, great for snorkelling, try and spot the ancient city of
“Olous” which is visible on the sea bed. Further along the rocky
coast there are several pebble coves offering more isolation and
privacy.
Elounda has
retained all of its original Cretan charm and remains a tranquil spot
in both early and late season; however in the height of the summer
Elounda becomes a lively resort
