Georgioupolis used
to be a tiny fishing village up to 1990 or so, located on the delta of
the river Almiros next to a long sandy beach. Nowadays is a small
lively tourist village with the village square surrounded by
eucalyptus trees, café-bars and tavernas as the focal point.
Although tourist
facilities have expanded, Georgioupolis in Chania hasn’t lost any of its
original charm and tranquillity, it’s still a tightly knit community
of locals involved primarily with the traditional activities of stock
breeding, farming and fishing, it still has small port with fishing
boats and small tourist boats.
Georgioupolis is
surrounded by spectacular mountain scenery; it has a unique and laid
back atmosphere, with old eucalyptus trees, small river that flows
into the sea, and the longest sandy beach in Western Crete (9 km), It
is so long and wide that it never feels crowded, if you’re the kind of
person who loves deserted beaches then walk a little towards the east,
its quieter there and you will find lots of deserted spots. A good
selection of Chania hotels to experience a wonderful Chania Holiday
