Perched on the hillside overlooking the
sea, and hills rolling away into the fertile countryside,
Pissouri is situated midway between Paphos and Limassol
(30km). A few kilometres west is Aphrodite's Rock
(5km), to the east, the shoreline of Limassol and with
spectacular views of the Troodos Mountain range to the north -
the views are breathtaking! Pissouri is a unique resort, with
the colourful village situated on the hills and fringed by the
majestic shoreline of Pissouri Bay.
Pissouri is a traditional village with its Cypriot character still intact and
is a working village of farmers - an area famous for its vineyards. With
its numerous, quaint little churches (there's even one in the Beach valley!) and
a good selection of shops, supermarkets, banks and small galleries selling art
and handicrafts, which are scattered around the village. The focal point
of the village is the picturesque (pedestrian) village square, with welcoming
tavernas and cafe-bars, where in the summer a weekly 'Cyprus Night' is held,
offering food, drink, music and Greek dancing. You'll find a good
selection of restaurants, tavernas and cafe-bars offering good quality cuisine.
The Amphitheatre completed in 2000 and seating 800 spectators plays host to a
variety of events including traditional folk dancing (local and from abroad) and
plays - ranging from Greek tragedies/comedies to Shakespeare. Spectacularly set
high up on the edge of the village, with panoramic views of Akrotiri and
Limassol, it is well worth a visit.
Pissouri Bay (5km/3miles from the village - 25/30min walk) has developed from
a jetty and one small taverna into a good collection of tavernas and a few shops
hugging the coast, still managing to retain a Cypriot atmosphere. The glorious
sand and shingle beach (recently awarded the Blue Flag) with its clear blue
waters, sweeps the coastline - 2km in length, it extends from the white cliffs
of Cape Aspro to the west and ends at the rocky area of Mavrorotsos at the
eastern end, thus creating a wonderful vista of hills and the great expanse of
the sea. Watersports are available from the jetty in the summer months.
Nightlife in Pissouri is low-key, but with a great variety of restaurants,
tavernas and cafe-bars, whether up in the village or down by the bay, the focus
is definitely on pleasurable dining in superb surroundings. For a greater
choice of livlier night-time pursuits, Paphos or Limassol are not too far away.
Ideal for couples and families.
